Olefin Graft for Sun and Skin Care

Interpolymer's Olefin Graft Polymer for Skin and Sun Care

SYNTRAN® PC 5227--For SPF Boosting in Sun and Skin Care

Provides many benefits for both sun care and skin care as detailed below.

We have provided the "Mechanism of Action" below followed by the Sun Care Benefits and technical information and then The Skin Care Benefits can be found immediately below the Sun Care information.

Mechanism of Action

Solvatochromism:

In hetergenous films found in sun care products, primary hierarchical organization of the film occurs during application via the covalent linkages of the film components.  Higher order structures are assembled through the intra-chain associations aided by non-covalent forces such as hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic stacking, solvation effects and electrostatic interactions.   It is these higher order associations that explain the mechanism of action for the SPF boosting observed from the inclusion of Syntran PC 5227, INCI: Polyacrylate 15 (and) Polyacrylate 17.

Syntran PC 5227 is an olefin graft polymer with semi-crystalline polymer segments and amorphous acrylic segments.  By itself, the polymer possesses minimal SPF contribution.  This polymer appears to have a uniquie affinity for several of the more widely used organic UV absorbers.  This affinity, or solvation, leads to more ordered and regular structures and therefore better exposes the UV segments to photoexcitation.  In addition to its unique structure, the polymer contains a significant number of polar groups which assist in the formation of the dipoles necessary to change the sprctral position of the UV absorbers.  This shift is attributed to the change in the polarity of the system.  During the application and drying process, the secondary energy forces (non-covalent) permit the UV absorbers to aggregate in an ordered manner along the more ordered semmi-crystalline segment of the polymer.  While there is no induced proton or electron transfer, ionization, orcomplexation, the polar groups modify the energy structure of the now oriented UV molecules.  the resulting shhift in UV spectra via the use of solvents and polarity is called solvatochromism.

Syntran PC 5227 Sun Care Technical Information

In Vivo:  Tests performed on ten volunteers demonstrated that when Syntran® PC 5227 was added to an SPF 20 Control creme, the resulting SPF factor was increased by over 40%.

The below results were obtained using an O/W control formula and the maximum permitted levels of various commonly used organic UV absorbers.   The graph illustrates the In Vitro test results of the SPF boosting potential for individual active ingredients.

In Vitro results:   Tests on a low and hight SPF control creme formulations with Syntran® PC 5227 using 3 standard organic UV absorbers.  The graphs demonstrate the optimum synergy and formulating levels of the SPF boosting polymer (as is basis).

This acrylate grafted olefin polymer is designed specifically to increase the efficacy of UV absorbers.  The use of Syntran PC 5227 should permit formulators of sun protection products to reduce the high cost of active SPF ingredients.

In Vitro test results demonstrate that when Syntran PC 5227 is added to a Control SPF 15 creme with organic UV absorbers, the SPF factor is increased by nearly 300%.

SPF TESTING RESULTS FOR CUSTOMERS

Technical Article: Novel Graft Polymer Boosts SPF Performance

Polyacrylate 15 (and) polyacrylate 17 boosts the efficacy of traditional organic UV absorbers in an SPF 15 sunscreen by nearly 300%.

The same creme formulation with the UV absorbers reduced by 66% was able to show an SPF of 21 with the addition of the Syntran PC 5227.
